Description
An oil painting on canvas, executed in the Fête galante style characteristic of the Rococo period. The scene depicts multiple elegantly dressed figures in a pastoral landscape, including a man playing a lute-like instrument and a woman holding sheet music, accompanied by other adults and children. The artwork is housed in an ornate, carved, and gilded frame. Affixed to the lower center of the frame is a brass plaque, inscribed with the English text: ‘The scale of love / Jean-Antoine Watteau / Bequeathed by Sir Julius Wernher / © The National Gallery.’
