Luton Hoo - Bedrooms
Lot 2138:
Description
A collection comprising three framed hand-colored satirical engravings on paper, a double-arm wall sconce, and a decorative sign. The illustrations include two horizontal format prints depicting men playing billiards or snooker in a caricatured style. One of these prominently features the masthead “FUNCH, OR, THE LONDON CHARIVARI” and small, partially legible captions that include terms such as “Billiard-room,” “Mr. Mellowes,” and “Mr. Gladstone.” A third, vertically oriented illustration also depicts men playing billiards and carries a partially legible caption referencing “Stubbs” and an “American Coach.” All three illustrations are presented under glass within gilt-wood or gold-toned frames with cream mats. The traditional double-arm wall sconce appears to be polished brass or similar metal, fitted with two cream fabric shades. Completing the collection is a rectangular “SNOOKER ROOM” sign with a textured background and a metallic border. The items are consistent with an apparent late 19th to early 20th-century period.
Condition report:
Good overall visual condition. The framed illustrations show minor age-consistent toning to the paper; frames and mats are generally sound with light surface wear commensurate with age. The wall sconce appears complete with minor tarnishing to the brass or similar metal finish, consistent with age and use; the fabric shades are intact with light signs of wear. The \"SNOOKER ROOM\" sign shows minimal surface wear.
