Description
John Singer Sargent (American, 1856-1925), Portrait of Lady Alice Wernher (née Alice Sedgwick Mankiewicz, 1870-1948), painted in 1902. This large, vertically oriented oil on canvas portrait depicts Lady Wernher seated in an elegant, light-colored dress and a pearl choker, characteristic of late 19th to early 20th-century style. The painting is housed in an ornate, heavily carved giltwood frame. A brass plaque affixed to the bottom center of the frame reads: “Lady Wernher / by J. S. Sargent, 1902 / The Wernher Collection / Source: English Heritage photo library.” A white label on the left side of the frame indicates “Prev Auction LOT 81.”
Condition report:
The painting and frame appear to be in good overall condition. No significant visible damage to the canvas or frame is evident upon initial inspection. Minor surface wear commensurate with age may be present.
