Description
A large-format Southeast Asian relief panel, likely of Thai or Cambodian origin, depicting a mythological battle scene. The composition illustrates a confrontation between figures in ornate horse-drawn chariots, a theme associated with Southeast Asian epics such as the Ramayana or Ramakien. The figures are rendered in traditional style, wearing elaborate mongkut stepped crowns and ornate jewellery, and are depicted wielding weapons including bows and swords. The scene is set above a decorative floral and foliate lower border. The panel is a shallow relief with a textured dark ground and gold-toned highlights, designed in the style of a traditional temple rubbing. It is mounted in a stained wooden frame with a gilded inner slip.
