Description

This lot consists of a pair of framed silk embroideries featuring traditional Chinese bird-and-flower subjects. The panels are executed in silk thread on a cream-colored silk ground using hand-embroidery techniques such as satin stitch. One embroidery depicts a fenghuang or Chinese phoenix with multi-colored plumage near pink peonies and blue rockery. The second embroidery features two birds with long tail feathers perched on a pine branch accented by pink blossoms. Each piece features a four-character calligraphic inscription in black thread. The phoenix piece is inscribed Wu Feng Ming Zou, translated as Dance and song of the phoenix. The bird and pine piece is inscribed Ming He Yang Chun, translated as Harmonious bird song in the warm spring. These pieces are characteristic of mid-20th-century Chinese export decorative arts. Both are housed in light wood frames under glass.

55cm x 38cm.

Condition report:

The embroideries are in good overall condition with vibrant colors. There is minor undulation to the silk ground within the frames. The wooden frames show light surface wear, minor scuffing, and small dings consistent with age and handling.
