Lot 399:
A Pair of Japanese Earthenware Vases
Description
A pair of Japanese earthenware vases of waisted cylindrical form with flared rims and bases. The bodies are composed of fine cream-coloured earthenware with a characteristic finely crazed glaze, typical of Satsuma-ware production. The central decorative frieze on each vase depicts a phoenix (Hō-ō) in flight amongst a profusion of flowering peonies and chrysanthemums, rendered in overglaze enamels of red, blue, green, and orange. The decoration is further enhanced with extensive gilded highlights and detailing. The upper and lower borders are decorated with multiple horizontal bands, including geometric diaper patterns and foliate scrolls in polychrome and gold. No maker marks, signatures, or labels are visible in the provided photographs.
