Luton Hoo - Bedrooms
Lot 1535:
Description
A pair of framed monochrome studies. The first piece is a drawing or print, likely pencil or sanguine, on light paper, depicting multiple studies of putti or cherubs in various classical or Renaissance-inspired poses, some holding flowers, one with a small dog. A faint inscription, possibly a signature and date, „C.W. Welsley, 1906“ is visible in the lower left. The second artwork, in an identical frame, is a monochrome drawing or print, likely sanguine or red chalk, on aged paper, portraying a Renaissance-style study of an adult female head and a child’s head. Both artworks are presented in elaborate, possibly gilded and antiqued wood frames with deeply carved acanthus-leaf or scrolling motifs, matted in white and glazed. The style of these works is reminiscent of classical and Renaissance studies, with parallels seen in artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Louis Léopold Boilly, as indicated by visual research.
