Lot 442:
Description
A pair of circular earthenware cabinet plates featuring central transfer-printed vignettes of classical Roman ruins. The landscape scenes are rendered in polychrome and depict architectural remnants including columns and porticos; one scene includes a waterfall and figures in the foreground, while the other features ruins set upon a wooded incline. These central medallions are enclosed by a fine beaded gilded line and set within a broad border of bright turquoise-green glaze. The outer rims are finished with an elaborate gilded border composed of repeating neo-classical scrolls and foliate motifs. The reverse of the plates shows a clear glaze with an all-over network of fine crazing and a raised foot-ring. On the underside of each plate, there is a mark printed in dark ink consisting of the characters No followed by a superscript line under the o and the digits 123. The characters spell a pattern or shape number rather than a maker name.
