Luton Hoo - Bedrooms
Lot 177:
Description
A large, multi-sectioned, built-in white-painted wooden bookcase, designed in a Neoclassical or Georgian Revival style. The architectural millwork features elaborate carved friezes with egg-and-dart and foliate motifs, dental molding, and decorative pilasters. The unit comprises multiple open shelving sections above a series of closed cabinets. A distinctive concealed doorway is seamlessly integrated into one section of the shelving, disguised with faux book spines. The shelves are currently densely packed with numerous antique volumes, predominantly leather or cloth-bound, in varying shades of brown, red, green, and yellow, many exhibiting gold tooling. Visible English text on some spines includes «CONTRACT» on legal texts and general «HISTORY» designations, alongside numerical volume indicators. Decorative objects, including a small gilded clock, a figural sculpture, and a dark urn, are interspersed among the books. Please note: The books and decorative objects are for display purposes only and are not included in the lot.
Condition report:
Overall stable and well-maintained condition. The architectural millwork shows minor surface wear consistent with age and use, including some scuffs and small paint chips to the white finish. The faux book spines on the concealed doorway exhibit notable wear from use, indicating regular operation. The books demonstrate a range of preservation from good to considerably worn.
