Lot 2045:
Description
A framed oil on canvas reproduction depicting a formal waist-up portrait of Grinling Gibbons, after the original painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller, circa 1690. The subject is shown in late 17th to early 18th-century European attire, characterized by a long, dark curly periwig and dark coat over a white shirt. He holds a sculptor’s tool and rests his hand on a classical-style white bust. The painting is housed in an ornate, gilded wooden frame with carved scroll and floral motifs. A brass plaque on the frame identifies the subject as «Grinling Gibbons» and bears the inscription «© The National Portrait Gallery», indicating this item is a reproduction of the original work.
Condition report:
Good overall condition. The canvas appears stable with vibrant colors. The ornate gilded wooden frame is intact, showing minor wear consistent with age but no major visible damage or deterioration.
