Lot 348:
Description
This architectural design for a chimney piece, in the Neoclassical style often associated with architects such as Robert Adam, James ‘Athenian’ Stuart, and Sir William Chambers, is likely a print or reproduction. It depicts a detailed design for a Neoclassical or Georgian style fireplace mantel, referred to as a «chimney piece.» The design, rendered in ink or graphite on light-toned paper, showcases classical elements including caryatids, urns, and a central frieze with a crest. Text at the top identifies it as «Design of a Chimney Piece for the Ante Room,» followed by «D» and a partially obscured «Scale of feet.» The artwork is presented in a dark wooden frame with a gold-toned inner bezel and glass covering. A label on the bottom right of the frame or mat reads «MARRIOTT CHELSEA 1978,» likely indicating the framer or a date of reproduction.
Condition report:
Good overall condition. The print appears well-preserved under glass. The frame shows minor wear consistent with age. Reflections are visible on the protective glass.
