Description
A pair of mid-century gouache paintings on black textured paper by the artist Abéré, associated with the Poto-Poto School of Brazzaville. The first composition depicts four elongated, stylised figures, likely dancers or warriors, adorned with vibrant radiating headdresses in red, yellow, and white, while holding shields and spears. The second composition features two similar figures positioned alongside three large blue and white wading birds amongst reeds near a stylised tree. The works exhibit the minimalist aesthetic and vibrant palette characteristic of the Congolese Poto-Poto movement established in the 1950s. Both works are signed in white pigment ABÉRÉ: to the lower right corner. The pair is housed behind glass in a single light-toned wooden frame divided by a central rail.
