Description
This architectural study is executed in watercolor and ink on paper, depicting a detailed interior view of a Gothic cathedral aisle. The composition looks down the length of a vaulted corridor toward a large, ornate stained-glass window. The artist has used fine pen-and-ink lines to define the architectural elements, including the complex rib vaulting, stone moldings, and window tracery, overlaid with light watercolor washes to suggest depth and the play of light. A group of figures is depicted walking through the space, their attire, including long coats and hats, suggesting a late Victorian date. A signature and date are present in the lower right corner; however, the characters are not clearly legible and the artist cannot be identified from the inscription (photo 1). The work is presented under glass with a dark green mount and a gilt inner slip, housed in a dark wood frame.
