Lot 447:
Description
This lot comprises a collection of eleven vintage matchboxes and one small commemorative booklet, predominantly originating from the United Kingdom. The matchboxes are largely branded « THE BRITANNIA MATCH COMPANY » and « SAFETY MATCH, » featuring a variety of British landmarks such as « Big Ben, » the « Tower of London, » « Marble Arch, » « Admiralty Arch, » « Buckingham Palace, » and « Nelson’s Column, » often identified as part of a « London Series. » Several boxes bear « 2p » (2 pence) pricing and are marked « BRITISH MADE, » though some also note « FIRST QUALITY ASPEN WOOD – AUSTRIAN MATCHES » or « MADE IN AUSTRIA. » Royal-themed matchboxes include one commemorating a « Royal Silver Jubilee celebration » (likely 1977) and another featuring « LADY DIANA Prince of Wales. » The accompanying small booklet displays an image of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, dated « 29th July 1981, » with a stylized signature. The collection’s style and markings indicate a period of production in the mid-to-late 20th century. The matchboxes are constructed from cardboard with printed paper labels.
