Luton Hoo - Bedrooms
Lot 395:
Description
A pair of Jacobean Revival armchairs, constructed from dark-stained oak. The first armchair features extensive and intricate deep carving across its back panel and solid wooden seat, depicting large central rosettes surrounded by foliate scrolls, bordered by stylized floral motifs. It is further adorned with heavy scrolled and carved armrests, supported by turned and carved front legs. This design emulates the robust forms characteristic of 17th-century English wainscot or joined armchairs. The second armchair, while sharing turned and carved front posts and scrolled arm supports, presents a more rectilinear design with an upholstered rectangular back and seat in dark brown leather, secured by decorative tacks, and simple carved finials on its top rail. Both chairs exhibit robust forms consistent with their likely age and use.
Condition report:
Both chairs appear to be in good, stable condition. Minor surface wear, scuffs, and abrasions commensurate with age and handling are present on the wooden elements. The dark brown leather upholstery on the second chair shows some creasing and minor surface wear, but no significant tears or losses. A small, unreadable white tag is affixed to the lower front leg of the heavily carved wooden chair.
