Description
A lot comprising two pieces of early to mid-20th-century paper ephemera. The first item is a printed reproduction of the Instrument of Abdication of King Edward VIII, dated 10 December 1936. The document is printed on tan cardstock with a shaped upper edge and features the royal coat of arms. It includes facsimile signatures of Edward RI, Albert, Henry, and George. A contemporary newspaper clipping containing a portion of the King’s farewell broadcast speech is adhered to the lower right corner, beginning with the text: A few hours ago I discharged my last duty as King and Emperor.
The second item is a betting voucher issued by J. John Commission Agents Ltd. The document is printed on cream-coloured paper with red and black headings, including: Starting Price on All Races, No Limit, Win and Place, and Keep This Voucher, Which Must Be Returned When Claiming Winnings. The voucher lists banking locations in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and London. It is extensively annotated with handwritten ink notes, including the names Betty Burns and George Smith, alongside addresses such as 149 brownfield and Glasgow.
