Description
A collection of mid-to-late 19th-century British newspapers and illustrated supplements, primarily comprising issues of The Examiner and The Illustrated London News. The lot includes several editions of The Examiner from 1854, with mastheads identifying the section as The Political Examiner. Visible issue numbers include 2,414 (6 May 1854), 2,431 (2 September 1854), 2,434 (23 September 1854), and 2,444 (2 December 1854). These issues contain dense political commentary and news reports from the Crimean War era, including headlines such as Is Austria to be Trusted? and Another of the Wildflowers.
The collection also features various pages and supplements from The Illustrated London News, with dates ranging from December 1846 to mid-1896. Notable wood-engraved illustrations and features include scenes from the Coronation of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia (1896), an illustration of the Advance Towards Dongola: An Egyptian Mixed Battery (28 March 1896), reports from the Transvaal by Mr Melton Prior (4 April 1896), and a large-scale illustration of passengers within a train carriage (2 May 1896).
