A decorative animal-head hilted white metal dagger and scabbard, India, 20th century
Description
A decorative khanjar-style dagger featuring a curved, polished white metal blade. The hilt is cast from white metal and incorporates a knuckle guard extending from the crossguard to the pommel. The pommel is terminal in a stylized animal head, resembling a lion or tiger, with red stones set for eyes. The grip is decorated with cast foliate and imbricated scale motifs. The accompanying scabbard is constructed from matching white metal with pierced openwork floral and geometric designs throughout, revealing a red fabric liner underneath. The throat of the scabbard shows visible yellow metal where the outer white metal finish has worn away. There are no maker’s marks, signatures, or inscriptions present on the blade, hilt, or scabbard.
