November Toys & Vintage Auction
Lot 500:
Description
This lot features two historical items: a fraternal ceremonial sash and a Victorian cloth-bound book. The ceremonial sash is constructed from blue silk or synthetic ribbon with a moiré (watered) finish. It is gathered at the centre by a gold-tone metallic floral or butterfly-shaped clasp and features a wide terminal section finished with heavy gold-tone bullion fringe. The sash is embroidered with gold metallic thread in capital letters reading BRIGHTON & WEST SUSSEX KNIGHTS CHAPTER No. 42. The accompanying book is a copy of the narrative poem Rokeby by Sir Walter Scott, Bart., published in Edinburgh by Adam and Charles Black. The title page is dated MDCCCLXIX (1869) and states the volume includes all his introductions and notes, various readings, and the editor’s notes. The book includes a frontispiece engraving of Smailholm Tower, credited to J.M.W. Turner R.A. and W. Forrest. The volume is bound in brown cloth with a gold-stamped harp emblem on the front cover.
