A hand-carved hardwood and animal hide tripod stool, East Africa
Description
A hand-carved prestige stool or seat constructed from a single piece of dark-stained hardwood with separate leg supports and cross-stretcher. The seat is formed in a deep crescent shape with a heavily textured rim featuring rhythmic, scalloped gouge marks. This chip-carving technique extends down the length of the three splayed legs. The centre of the seat is inlaid with a circular patch of natural animal hide, retaining its hair, which is secured to the timber with a series of small yellow metal upholstery-style studs. The structure is reinforced with a hand-hewn horizontal cross-stretcher passing through the two front legs. The wood displays a variegated dark brown finish with evidence of hand-tooling throughout.
