Lot 622:
Description
A pair of framed commemorative copper plates featuring topographical views of Bristol, England. These plates are created using a photomechanical transfer process, acid-etched onto copper-finished metal sheets to replicate the appearance of traditional line engraving. The first plate illustrates St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, showing the church from a southeast perspective. Below the image is a detailed historical inscription printed in black: ST MARY REDCLIFFE, BRISTOL, followed by a text beginning THE RESTORATION OF THE ABOVE CHURCH WAS COMMENCED ON THE 18TH OF MAY 1842 AND ON THE YEAR MAY 1872 THE TOWN W. PROCTOR BAKER ESQ. LAID THE. The text continues with historical specifications regarding the height of the tower and spire. The second plate depicts the Clifton Suspension Bridge as viewed from the Avon Gorge, with the printed caption: Clifton Suspension Bridge as viewed from I. K. Brunel’s design. Both plates feature a high-contrast black-on-copper finish. They are presented in matching simple wooden frames with a light finish and mitred corners.
