Luton Hoo - Bedrooms
Lot 2031:
Description
A substantial 19th-century English pedestal desk, likely constructed from mahogany, featuring a curved front and a clear glass top protecting the main writing surface. The desk is characterized by a prominent, elaborately carved wooden backsplat with scroll and shell motifs, indicative of a Late Empire or early Victorian style. It comprises a central long drawer with a keyhole, flanked by two pedestals. Each pedestal features a single drawer above a cabinet door, with the doors accented by smaller decorative carved panels. The drawers are fitted with turned wooden pulls. Internally, the left cabinet contains two shelves, while the right cabinet holds a pull-out drawer with a brass handle and a compartment below. No visible text or markings were observed.
Condition report:
Fair to good antique condition. Exterior surfaces show general patina, minor scuffs, and surface wear consistent with age and use. The interior wood surfaces exhibit significant finish loss, staining, and surface abrasions. The glass top appears intact with minor surface scratches. No visible structural damage noted. Keys are not present.
