Description
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864-1901), ‘Stealing Alfie’s Cap’. This monochrome illustration, executed in a sketch-like, humorous style, depicts a horse reaching out of a stable stall to take a cap from a person bent over a bucket. The artwork, rendered in what appears to be pencil or charcoal on paper, is captioned ‘STEALING ALFIE’S CAP’ centered below the image. The drawing is presented within a clean white mat and housed in a gold-toned, fluted/reeded wooden frame. The style and subject matter are consistent with the artist’s oeuvre, particularly his humorous sketches and circus-related works. While the present work is unsigned, similar examples by the artist are frequently encountered signed, often as lithographs or prints.
Condition report:
The drawing and mat appear to be in good overall condition. The frame exhibits minor wear consistent with age but no significant damage.
