Description
An Edwardian inlaid rosewood fall-front coal purdonium, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The piece is crafted from dark, figured rosewood veneer, featuring extensive marquetry in lighter woods throughout. It incorporates an undulating tray-top with a pierced brass gallery, and a central mirrored panel in the upper section. Below the mirror, a flat surface is adorned with a circular foliate marquetry inlay. The lower body presents a hinged drop-front panel with an elaborate rococo-style marquetry design and brass pull handles, which opens to reveal an open storage compartment, typical of a coal purdonium. The cabinet is fitted with small casters. A white tag bearing the number “5” is visible on the top tray.
Condition report:
Exhibits typical antique wear consistent with age and use, including surface abrasions to the veneer and expected patina on the brass elements. The marquetry appears largely intact. Structurally sound.
