Lot 203:
Description
This lot comprises a collection of eleven vintage matchboxes and one small commemorative booklet, predominantly originating from the United Kingdom. The matchboxes are largely branded “THE BRITANNIA MATCH COMPANY” and “SAFETY MATCH, ” featuring a variety of British landmarks such as “Big Ben, ” the “Tower of London, ” “Marble Arch, ” “Admiralty Arch, ” “Buckingham Palace, ” and “Nelson’s Column, ” often identified as part of a “London Series.” Several boxes bear “2p” (2 pence) pricing and are marked “BRITISH MADE, ” though some also note “FIRST QUALITY ASPEN WOOD – AUSTRIAN MATCHES” or “MADE IN AUSTRIA.” Royal-themed matchboxes include one commemorating a “Royal Silver Jubilee celebration” (likely 1977) and another featuring “LADY DIANA Prince of Wales.” The accompanying small booklet displays an image of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, dated “29th July 1981,” with a stylized signature. The collection’s style and markings indicate a period of production in the mid-to-late 20th century. The matchboxes are constructed from cardboard with printed paper labels.
