Lot 500:
Description
This lot comprises a collection of thimbles housed within six wooden display units. The display units include three standing cases: one rectangular with a dark wood finish and red felt lining, one hexagonal with a reddish-brown finish and carved details, and another smaller rectangular reddish-brown case. The remaining three units are shallower open trays of various sizes, two in a lighter wood tone and one with red felt lining. The thimbles, numbering approximately 100-150 pieces, are predominantly porcelain or ceramic with some metallic examples. They display a wide array of decorations including souvenir themes (e.g., “WASHINGTON, ” “FLORIDA, ” “MOUNT VERNON, ” “THE TOWER OF LONDON, ” “Pont St Michel” [Mont Saint-Michel], “AORLE” [Caorle]), commemorative designs (e.g., “100 Years WWI 1918,” “1914-1918,” “VERDUN FRANCE, ” “ROYAL NAVY, ” “ROYAL FLYING CORPS”), floral motifs, and plain or gold-banded patterns. The visible WWI centenary markings on some pieces suggest a 20th-21st century period for many of the thimbles.
