A Collection of Vintage and Antique French Opera Glasses
Description
This group of optical instruments comprises five pairs of opera glasses and two associated cases, predominantly of French origin. Included is a pair of nickel-plated brass glasses featuring high-relief floral scrollwork across the barrels. The left eyepiece rim bears the printed mark LEMAIRE and the right rim is marked FABT PARIS. A second pair is constructed from gilt brass with barrels covered in a cream and tan patterned damask fabric. The eyepiece rims are marked CHEVALIER and PARIS. A third pair, also in nickel-plated brass, is decorated with a relief-molded hunting scene depicting a stag amidst foliage; while marks are present on the eyepiece rims, they are not legible as a name. A fourth pair of compact glasses is finished in nickel-plated metal with cream pebble-grain textured barrels. The eyepiece rims are marked LUMINEX and 2 1/2 X PARIS. These are accompanied by a matching cream pebble-grain textured hard-shell case with a brass clasp. The final item is a set of flat folding binoculars with a black lacquered metal frame and nickel-plated adjustment components. These are housed in a dark brown textured leatherette pouch, which bears the mark BIJOU on the folding flap. All pairs feature central focusing wheels.
