Lot 488:
A Pair of Carved Hardwood Elephant Figures
Description
A pair of hand-carved hardwood figures, each depicting a stylized elephant in a vertical orientation. The elephants are carved from a dense, dark-stained tropical wood showing a visible natural grain. Each figure features a head with carved ears and eyes, and a pair of inlaid white tusks made of bone or a similar synthetic material. The trunk of each elephant extends downward to form a circular, pedestal-style base decorated with a cross-hatched textured pattern. The top of each carving (the rear of the elephant) is finished with a flared circular rim containing a recessed central hole, potentially functioning as a candle holder or decorative stand. The interior of the circular recesses shows some darkening to the wood. There are no maker’s marks, signatures, or country-of-origin labels present on the visible surfaces of the objects.
