Description

An English longcase clock by William Marston of Bishop’s Castle, dating to the late 18th or early 19th Century. The tall, dark wood case features extensive light wood inlay, likely veneer, depicting floral motifs, urns, and scrolling foliage on the trunk and base. It is surmounted by a broken arch pediment adorned with three decorative finials. The highly decorative brass dial is fitted with elaborate cast brass spandrels, Roman numeral hour markers, and Arabic minute markers. It includes a subsidiary seconds dial and a date aperture. The dial is engraved ‘Wm Marston’ and ‘Bp: CASTLE’ above the main time display. The internal mechanism, including the pendulum and weights, is visible through the opened waist door.

Condition report:

Good overall condition for its age. The wood case exhibits a rich patina with minor surface wear consistent with age and use. All major exterior components are present. The brass dial shows expected tarnishing; however, engravings remain clear and hands are intact. The internal mechanism appears complete, but functionality has not been tested. Minor losses or lifting to inlay may be present upon closer inspection.
