Lot 2066:
Description
A large, rectangular woven tapestry depicting ‚The Empress‘ Tea‘ from The Story of the Emperor of China Series, a design originally woven by the Beauvais Manufactory. The tapestry portrays an elaborate outdoor scene with multiple female figures dressed in period or exotic attire, gathered around a decorative, tent-like canopy set amidst lush trees and a distant landscape. The central figure is seated under the canopy, attended by others who offer flowers and serve beverages from a nearby table. The overall style and subject matter are characteristic of a European interpretation of an Orientalist or Chinoiserie theme. The textile, likely woven from wool and silk, features intricate details and a varied, mellowed color palette, enclosed by a patterned woven border. No specific weaver’s marks or signatures are discernible on the tapestry itself, though a small, white, unreadable identification label is present at the bottom center. While the original series dates to the late 18th century, similar examples in the market are sometimes identified as later recreations.
Condition report:
Good condition. The textile exhibits expected age-related color shifts and minor fading consistent with its age and exposure. No obvious major tears, holes, or significant material loss are apparent. Some minor surface dust or discoloration may be present. The woven border appears intact.
