Luton Hoo - Bedrooms
Lot 2221:
Description
An 18th Century English oak coffer or blanket chest, exhibiting traditional frame-and-panel construction. The rectangular form features a hinged lid with three recessed panels, which are mirrored on the front, and single panels on each side. The design suggests a Jacobean or Jacobean-style influence. It stands on short, integrated block feet. No discernible text, carvings, or manufacturer’s marks are visible on the chest itself.
Condition report:
Good overall condition commensurate with age and use. The piece displays significant age and wear consistent with prolonged use, including numerous surface scratches, scuffs, and a rich, darkened patination across the wood. It appears structurally robust. The metal hinges are functional, though they may be later replacements.
