Description
This lot comprises a Holmes-style hand-held stereoscope viewer, an assortment of photographic stereoview cards, and several glass stereographic slides. The stereoscope is constructed with a wooden handle and frame, featuring an ornate stamped aluminium hood decorated with scrolling floral motifs and finished with a red velvet-lined rim. The viewer includes a detached wooden sliding cross-bar card holder. The collection of cards includes various topographical and genre scenes, with several examples bearing the printed margin text Sold only by Underwood & Underwood. One card is clearly titled YOSEMITE FALLS, NEAR VIEW, CAL., U.S.A. Subject matter across the collection includes natural landmarks, coastal scenes of crashing waves, museum galleries featuring classical statuary, and large vaulted interior halls. The lot is completed by several glass stereoview slides mounted in protective frames depicting various interior and architectural scenes.
