November Toys & Vintage Auction
Lot 406:
Description
A collection of seven Limoges porcelain cabinet and trinket pieces, each featuring a deep cobalt blue glaze and gold-tone decoration. The assortment includes a miniature ewer with a scrolled handle and frilled rim, a small tripod vase with a crimped gilded rim on three feet, three oval trinket dishes, a small circular jar with a domed lid, and a circular trinket box. Most items are decorated with gold-tone transfer scenes in the fête galante style, depicting courting couples in 18th-century attire. The trinket box features a different design with a central polychrome floral bouquet on a white ground within a gold-bordered cobalt surround. The pieces bear two variations of printed gold-tone marks. One mark, seen on the base of the dishes, comprises the semi-circular text LIMOGES – FRANCE above a stylised letter V (photo 2). The second mark, visible on other items, features a shield-shaped border topped with a stylised crown containing the text LIMOGES over CASTEL over FRANCE, with 22K GOLD printed to the right (photo 3).
