Description

An English earthenware collection of ten character jugs. The largest piece depicts Queen Victoria wearing a crown and pearl necklace, featuring a sceptre-form handle. The base bears a printed factory mark consisting of a lion above a circular logo with four intertwined D characters, enclosed within a circle topped by a crown. The outer ring of the circle contains the characters MADE IN ENGLAND and the inner ring contains ROYAL DOULTON. Additional printed text below the logo reads hand made and hand decorated, Royal Doulton, QUEEN VICTORIA, D 6816, Modelled by Stanley James Taylor, © 1987 ROYAL DOULTON, and NEW COLOURWAY 1988. The set includes five medium-sized jugs featuring various historical and fictional figures. These comprise a gunsmith with a rifle-form handle, a gaoler with a handle in the form of heavy keys, Captain Hook with a hook-form handle, a highwayman in a red tricorn hat with a handle depicting a rider on horseback, and Robin Hood in a green hat with a bow-and-arrow handle. The collection is completed by four small and miniature jugs, including a huntsman in a red coat, a character in a grey wig and black hat, a figure in a green hat, and one tiny miniature jug.
