Luton Hoo - Bedrooms
Lot 1294:
Description
A pair of framed prints, likely reproductions or later editions of 17th-century illustrative works. The first print, titled ‘Gänse-vogel’ (Goose-bird), depicts an ostrich-like avian creature standing on an elaborate decorative stand. Accompanying text attributes the original work to W. Hollar and indicates it portrays an ostrich presented to Queen Henrietta Maria from New-England. The second print, titled ‘Uhu’ (Eagle Owl), features a regal, crowned owl. Text on this print references its provenance from the collections of M. Van der Loo, the Elder and Mr. James Mendes. Both prints exhibit a detailed, fine-line drawing style, characteristic of historical natural history or ‘cabinet of curiosities’ illustrations, possibly with subtle hand-coloring. Each is matted in off-white and presented under glass within an ornate, gilded wooden frame; the ‘Gänse-vogel’ in a lighter gold frame and the ‘Uhu’ in a more heavily decorated dark gold frame.
